Understanding your care
What is flap surgery?
Periodontal flap surgery, often called gum flap surgery, is a procedure in which the gum is gently lifted to give the dentist or gum specialist access to deeper tooth-root surfaces and supporting bone. Plaque, hardened deposits and inflamed tissue can then be removed more directly. In selected cases, the supporting bone or gum may also be reshaped or treated before the gum is repositioned and sutured.
It treats deeper areas
The procedure gives access to root surfaces and periodontal pockets that cannot be cleaned predictably with routine home care.
It follows assessment
Gum measurements, dental imaging and response to earlier non-surgical cleaning help determine whether surgery is appropriate.
It requires maintenance
Surgery does not permanently cure gum disease; daily cleaning and periodontal reviews remain essential.
This guide provides general patient education. A dentist must examine you and review suitable imaging before recommending treatment.
